The Peace Hour
Mission Statement
| The Decade of Nonviolence-Houston will promote Houston area
participation in the United Nation’s "Decade for a Culture of Peace and
Nonviolence for the Children of the World" in order to reduce the many
forms of violence that children suffer. We will encourage activities by
individuals and organizations that impart the spirit of nonviolence and that
cultivate the skills to achieve it. |

The UN's International Day for Peace - Friday, September 21
was established by a United Nations resolution in 1981. Last year more than 3,500
events took place in 200 countries to promote A Culture of Peace. Locally,
the Decade of Nonviolence-Houston, in conjunction with Rothko Chapel and the
United Nations Association Chapter of Houston, is sponsoring a local
commemoration of the day. City Council member Ada Edwards will read a City
of Houston proclamation. In addition, there will be speakers from the
consular corps and various faith leaders. The gathering space will be
decorated with eight large, free-standing murals created by children, plus
the United Nations flag. 10:00-11:30 a.m. in the Ray Courtyard at the Rice
Memorial Student Center in front of the Rice Memorial Chapel. The public is
invited. |
